Hi, I’m Melanie

I’m an experienced teacher, with a Master’s in English Education and ESL. I’ve taught around the world and domestically, working with students of many different ages, educational levels, and language backgrounds. I currently offer private tutoring out of my home in Port Townsend, WA and online.

My Approach

Student-Centered

I love working closely with students to help them determine their own learning goals and progress towards them. I believe in a communicative approach—I like to focus first on the content a student is trying express, and second on the mechanics that will help them to do so in the clearest possible way.

Project- and Process-Based

We learn best when we are creating—preferably something meaningful to us! I love to teach writing, and when doing so I encourage my students to embrace a process approach, otherwise known as writing workshop. In workshop, we are constantly creating, revising, editing, and re-creating —and what we learn through this process is ultimately more important than any one final product.
